NOTE: To pick up stitches along an edge using a crochet hook hold yarn underneath, insert hook into a stitch and draw up a loop. Hold this on the hook and work until the hook is full, then slide the stitches off the back of the hook onto your knitting needle.
CENTER BACK YOKE (Panels 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5):
Panels 1 & 2: With A, CO 5 sts. Work in St st for 5 rows. Break yarn. Join B, cont in St st for 10 rows. BO. Panel 3: With B, PU (see note) 5 sts along CO edge of A and cont in St st for 10 rows. BO and break yarn. Panel 4: Turn work sideways and using B, PU 15 sts along the edge. Work 3 rows in St st. Break yarn. Attach C and cont in St st for 5 rows. Break yarn. Attach B and work 10 rows. Break yarn. Attach C and work 5 rows. BO on next row. Panel 5: Rotate work and PU 15 sts along opp side of center panel. Work to correspond to Panel 4. Note: This forms the yoke pat of the center Back panel.
LOWER BACK (Panel 6):
Holding work so that long edge is up and with A, PU 50 sts. Work 5 rows St st. Change to B and cont in St st for 5 rows. Change to A and work 5 rows. Change to B and cont in St st. Work until piece meas 15 in. from last A stripe, ending with a WSR. Work 5 rows ribbing as foll: Rows 1, 3 & 5: *K 3, p 2; rep from * across. Rows 2 & 4: *K 2, p 3; rep from * across. BO after 5 rows.
UPPER BACK (Panel 7):
Rotate work so that long edge of yoke is up and with A, PU 50 sts evenly across edge. Work 2 rows in St st. Dec 5 sts evenly across next row. Work 2 rows. Dec 5 sts evenly across next row – 40 sts. Break yarn. Attach C and cont in St st for 1 row. Dec 5 sts evenly across next row -- 35 sts. Cont work in St st for 5 in., ending with a WSR. Next row (RS): Work 8 sts and place on a holder, BO 19 sts for neck, work next 8 sts. Working on these 8 sts cont in St st for 50 rows. Place these 8 sts on a holder and break yarn. Return to first 8 sts on holder and work in St st for 50 rows. Place these 8 sts on a holder and break yarn.
INNER SIDE PANELS (Panel 8 and 9 – make 2):
Note: The directions below will produce Panels 8 and 9. Make 2 – one for each front.
With D, CO 20 sts. Work 5 rows of ribbing as est for lower Back panel. Beg St st and work until 20 in. from beg, ending with a WSR. Cut yarn. Attach B and cont in St st until piece meas 21 in., ending with a WSR. Place these sts on a holder. Sew Panel 8 to side of middle Back panel making sure to match ribbed edges and align sts from holders. (Note: The right side will have Panel 7 sts on the left of Panel 8. The left side will have sts from Panel 7 on the right of Panel 8.) Place sts from both panels on ndls with RS facing. Attach A and work 27 sts across row; k2tog where the 2 panels meet for a better look. Work 5 rows in St st. Break yarn. Attach C and cont in St st for 5 in. Break yarn. Attach A and work 5 rows. Break yarn. Attach C and work 5 rows. Break yarn. Attach B and work 5 rows but do not break yarn. Mark this row for pocket top. Cont with B For 6 in., ending with a WSR. Break yarn. Attach D. Beg with a RSR, work ribbing as est on Back for 15 rows. (Note: The RS of Panel 8 becomes the WS starting at the ribbing. This will facilitate the RS of the pocket when it is turned up and sewn in place.) With the RS of the pocket facing, beg St st and work 4 in. Break yarn. Attach A and work 4 rows. Dec 5 sts evenly across next row. BO, using (k 1, p 1) rib across row to give it more stability. Turn pockets up to meet markers and whipstitch the sides tog. Make another panel to match.
SIDES (Panel 10):
With D, CO 12 sts. Work 5 rows of ribbing as est for lower Back panel. Beg St st and work until 55 in. from beg, ending with a WSR. Work 5 rows ribbing. BO. Work another panel to match. Fold panels in half and mark the centers.
SLEEVES (Panel 11 – make 2):
Beg at center marker of Panel 10 meas out each side 12 in. and mark this for edge of Sleeve and underarm. With D, PU 70 sts evenly across edge of Panel 10 picking up 2 sts on the edge of 2 rows and skipping a row to get a smooth look for the Sleeve. Work in St st, dec 1 st each side every 6th row 10 times – 50 sts. Cont in St st until Sleeve meas 12 in., ending with a WSR. Break yarn. Attach A and k 1 row. Work 5 rows in ribbing as est for lower Back panel. BO in ribbing. Work another Sleeve.
FINISHING: Sew panels together using mattress stitch. When sewing the pockets, work the mattress stitch through the top layer of the pocket to avoid a thicker seam. Sew side and Sleeve seams. Run all yarn ends in.
FRONT BAND & FACING (Panel 12 – make 2):
With D, CO 20 sts. Row 1: K 10, sl 1, k 9. Row 2: P. Cont in St st in this manner until piece meas 66 in. BO.
Sew Front band to Panels 9 and across neck edge of Panel 7 making sure to align bottom edges with pockets. Do not turn facing until the ties are attached to the Front.
TIES (make 6):
Make six I-cords with B, each 8 in. long. Leave about 12 in. of yarn at each end of ties for sewing. Position the ties on the Front bands at 1 in. above the top most A stripe and then evenly spaced down the Front. Sew firmly in place horizontally across the width of the Front from the side of Panel 9 to the sl st along the Fronts. Turn facing and whipstitch in place. Sew across the bottoms of the facing. Run all yarn ends in.
