The organizations listed below are a few of the many charities that accept knitted items.
Many national organizations have local chapters. Check the websites for free patterns and specific information.

Afghans for Afghans

This program sends hand-knit and crocheted blankets and garments to the people of Afghanistan.

Binky Patrol, Inc

Their mission is to help provide comfort and warmth to children experiencing trauma of any kind.

Caps for Kids

Volunteers knit and crochet caps and children’s accessories to be given to non-profit, non-denominational agencies in local communities.

Chemo Caps

Participants make soft, stylish hats for chemotherapy patients who have lost their hair. Hats may be distributed to local hospital oncology units or sent away to be distributed in other communities.

Chicagoland Head Huggers

Chicagoland Head Huggers is a not-for-profit organization committed to hugging every in-need chemo patient's head with a crafted hat donated by a caring volunteer. The group was founded by Pam Haschke, a survivor of a rare breast cancer with a high mortality rate. Since its inception, the organization has received over 2500 caps from hundreds of volunteers and groups across the region. More information available at the website.

Cubs for Kids

Volunteers knit sweaters, hats and scarves for teddy bears to be given to children at homeless shelters throughout the country.

The Handiwork Ministry

Providing handmade items of care and comfort to people in need.

Knit-a-Square

Knit-a-Square organizes 1,700 members from 30 countries worldwide to knit and send 8 x 8" squares for blankets. These squares are received by Knit-a-Square in Johnnesburg, and sewn into blankets for distribution to some of South Africa's 1.4 million AIDS orphans and abandoned children.

The Knitting Connection

The Knitting Connection's mission is to support children and families in need with crafted items utilizing the artistic talents of volunteer knitters, crocheters, and quilters. The Knitting Connection is based out of Boston but serves communities all over America.

Newborns in Need

This organization serves the needs of premature babies, who need hats and blankets to retain their body heat. Volunteers sew, knit and crochet clothing and baby blankets.

Operation Helmetliner

Although American troops are issued helmet liners by the military, those garments are made of synthetic materials. The mission of the Citizen Sam organization is to provide 100% wool helmetliners. Black is the preferred color, although dark brown and dark gray are also acceptable.

Project Linus

“Blanketeers” sew, quilt, knit or crochet blankets to be given to seriously ill or traumatized children.

Seamen’s Church Institute: Christmas At Sea

Since World War I, the Seamen’s Church Institute has provided scarves, watch caps and sweaters for far-flung mariners on Christmas Day. The organization collects donates items throughout the year.

Shawl Ministry

Knitters create a shawl to be given to comfort the recipient, or as a gift during a special time of life. Prayers are offered during the knitting of the shawl and before it is given away.

Snuggles Project

“Snuggles” are security blankets for homeless dogs and cats. These blankets must be machine washable and are donated directly to participating shelters listed under “Shelter Index” on the website.

Warm Up America!

Participants make afghans or 7" x 9" rectangles to be joined with others into afghans which are distributed to social service agencies within the community.

Warm Woolies

A non-profit organization whose volunteers knit wool clothing for poverty-stricken children.
