While this fabulous design might look daunting, fear not! When knitting any row, only two colors of the 13 different yarns needed to create this masterpiece are being worked. In the tradition of Norwegian knitwear design, the cardigan is worked in the round with an 8-stitch steek for the front cardigan opening as well as the armholes. The pattern suggests when changing colors to add new yarn in the middle of a steek and then break off yarn at the same midpoint. No need to fret over weaving in all those ends, as the steeks are sewn on a sew-ing machine before cutting, hence, capturing and securing all the yarn ends. The large charts are in black and white, using symbols to denote each yarn. The website has an extensive selection of downloadable patterns for hats, mittens, gloves, sweaters, and coverlets.

ruffled cardiganDanna Savage has created an instant classic with this one-button cardigan. The ruffles at the sleeve and hem edge add a wonderful feminine touch. The gorgeous handpainted alpaca yarn by Misti Alpaca does all the work to make this simple design really sing. Begin at the hem edge and work back and forth in rows on a circular needle. Once the length to the armholes is reached, the body is then divided for the front and back. This project will knit up quickly on the Size 10 US (6mm) needles, and the bulky-weight yarn will make you consider this to be your autumn-into-winter coat. The website has not only more patterns, but yarn, kits, totes, and buttons available as well.

She’s the author of Sock Innovation (Interweave Press, 2009), and the soon-to-be-published book Knit. Sock. Love. (see her website). All of her patterns available on the website, including Ellington, are worked from the cuff to the toe, using charts. They are full of texture! This pattern gives two final measurements based on two different inch and row gauges. The charts are very clear to read and the instructions are well written. She has good tips and designer notes at the beginning of the pattern, so don’t skip reading them. Once complete, you will be wearing a true work of art.

seashellDesigner Susan Wolcott will lead you step-by-step in these extensive instructions to create this lovely body-conscious pullover with 5/8-length sleeves and a wide collar, trimmed in a seashell pattern at the hem and sleeve edges. The sleeves are worked in the round from the cuff, followed by working the body in the round from the hem edge. The sleeves are then joined to the body to form the yoke and a raglan upper sleeve. There are charts as well as word instructions for the stitch patterns. The pattern is printed with a large font for easy reading. Susan presents a pattern differently than “normal,” but her method is very intuitively written and sizing directions read easily. Susan and her sister Jill offer an extensive pattern line on their website, author books, teach classes, and host workshops and events, such as the Y2Knit Tuscany Knitting Experience.
