Retro Sweater Set

This retro-look sweater set includes a color block sleeveless shell and short sleeve jacket worked in Knit One, Crochet Too Truffles.

A: CARDIGAN

* 2 (2, 2, 3, 3, 3) 50 gm/73 yd balls each in Cornflower #633 (B), Pistachio #421 (C) and Periwinkle #647 (D)
* One pair knitting needles in size 6 U.S. OR SIZE REQUIRED TO OBTAIN GAUGE

A & B: CARDIGAN & SHELL GAUGE

16 sts and 35 rows = 4 in. with Knit One, Crochet Too TRUFFLES in St st. TO SAVE TIME, TAKE TIME TO CHECK GAUGE.
SPECIAL TECHNIQUE 3-ndl BO = 3-needle bind off: Place sts from each shoulder holder onto separate ndls, points parallel and facing the same direction. Holding these with RS tog, and with a 3rd ndl same size as used in main section of garment, (insert ndl in first st from front ndl and first st from back ndl, and k2tog) twice, * pass first st from RH ndl over 2nd to BO, k next 2 sts from LH ndls tog as before: rep from * until 1 st rem. Fasten off.

A: CARDIGAN

Note: Work Color Blocks with separate lengths of yarn and in Intarsia – do not carry yarn at back of work.
LEFT FRONT: With A, CO 38 (42, 46, 50, 54, 58) sts. Work as for Back, placing colors as for right half of Back, until same length as Back to armhole. Shape armhole as for Back, shaping at beg of RS rows only – 28 (29, 30, 31,32, 33) sts. Work until armhole meas 4У2 (5, 5 1/2, 6, 6 1/2, 7) in. ending with a RSR. Shape neck: Next row (WS): BO 5 (6, 7, 8, 9, 10) sts at beg of row, finish row. Dec 1 st at same edge EOR 5 times -18 sts. Work even until same length as Back to shoulder. Place rem sts on holder.
RIGHT FRONT: Work as for Left Front, placing colors as for left half of Back, and rev all shaping.
BACK: With A, CO 76 (84, 92, 100, 108, 116) sts loosely.

Dec 1 st each side EOR 5 (7, 9, 11, 13, 15) times-56 (58, 60, 62, 64, 66) sts. Work even until armholes meas 71/2 (8, 8У2, 9, 91/2, 10) in., ending with a WSR. Next row (RS): Work across 18 sts and place on holder for shoulder, BO center 20 (22, 24, 26, 28, 30) sts for Back neck, place rem 18 sts on holder for 2nd shoulder. Note: Sts are bound off at center Back to give more stability to neck edge and prevent excess stretching.

Rows 1 -3: Work as for Rows 1 -3 of Back.
Row 4 (RS): Est Color Blocks row: (K 6 B, k 6 C, k 6 D) 3 times, ending with k 0 (0, 6, 6, 6, 6) sts B, k 0 (0, 0, 0, 6, 6) sts C. Row 5: P, working colors as est.
Rep Rows 4 & 5 for a total of 12 rows, ending with a WSR.
Next row (RS): (K 6 C, k 6 D, k 6 B) 3 times, ending with k 0 (0, 6, 6, 6, 6) sts C, k0(0, 0, 0, 6) stsD.
Complete as for first blocks, ending with a WSR. Change to A and St st. Work 2 rows. Shape cap: BO 5 (6, 7, 8, 9, 10) sts at beg of next 2 rows. Dec 1

FINISHING

Join shoulder seams using 3-ndl BO method.
Neck edging: With RS facing and A, PU and k 5 (6, 7, 8, 9, 10) sts on BO edge at center Right Front, evenly PU and k 18 sts on side of neck, PU and k 20 (22, 24, 26, 28, 30) sts along BO edge at center Back, evenly PU and k18 sts on side of neck, PU and k 5 (6, 7, 8, 9, 10) sts on BO edge at center Left Front – 66 (70, 74, 78, 82, 86) sts. K 1 row, p 1 row. With WS facing, BO sts purlwise.
Button band: With RS facing and A, PU and k 75 sts along Left Front edge. K 5 rows. With RS facing, BO purlwise. Buttonhole band: Work as for button band for 2 rows. Next row (WS): K 2, (yo, k2tog, k 12) 5 times, yo, k2tog, k 1. K 2 rows. BO all sts. Sew buttons opp buttonholes. Set in Sleeves at armhole edge. Sew underarm and side seams.

B: SHELL

NOTE: The shell is worked entirely of small blocks of 6 sts x 12 rows. Each block uses 75 yds of yarn. Precut your lengths of yarn for each color before beg each section and work in Intarsia – do not carry yarn at back of work.
BACK: With A, CO 72 (78, 90, 96, 102, 108) sts.
Row 1 (WS): K.
Rows 2 & 3: P.
Row 4 (RS): Est first section Color Blocks row: (K 6 B, k 6 C, k 6 D) 4 (4, 5,5, 5, 6) times, ending with k 0 (6, 0, 6, 6, 0) B, kO (0, 0, 0, 6,0) C.
Row 5: P, work colors as est.
Rep Rows 4 & 5 for a total of 12 rows, ending with a WSR.
Next Color Block section (RS): Move each color over by one block to the left and complete as for first section, ending with a WSR.
Cont Color Blocks pat moving each color one block to the left every 12th row for rem of piece. Work even as est until piece meas 15 (14 1/2, 14, 13 1/2, 13, 12 1/2) in. from beg, ending with a WSR. Shape armholes: Maintaining Color Blocks pat, BO 2 (3, 4, 5, 6, 7) sts at beg of next 2 rows. Dec 1 st each side EOR 6 (7, 11, 12, 13,14) times – 56 (58, 60, 62, 64, 66) sts. Work even until armholes meas 7 (7 1/2, 8, 8 1/2, 9, 91/2) in., ending with a WSR. Shape neck/shoulders: Next row (RS): Work across 17 sts and place on a holder for shoulder, BO center 22 (24, 26, 28, 30, 32) sts for Back neck, place rem 17 sts on a holder for 2nd shoulder. Note: Sts are BO at center Back to give more stability to neck edge and prevent excess stretching.
FRONT: Work as for Back until armholes meas 3 (3 1/2, 4, 41/2, 5, 5 1/2) in., ending with a WSR. Shape neck:
Next row (RS): Work across 22 sts, turn, leaving rem sts on a holder. Working on this side only, dec 1 st at neck edge EOR 5 times – 17 sts rem. Work even until same length as Back to shoulder. Place sts on a holder. To complete other side, BO center 12 (14, 16, 18, 20, 22) sts and work on rem sts to match first shoulder.

FINISHING

Join right shoulder using 3-ndl BO method. Neck edging: With RS facing and A, evenly PU and k 22 sts on left side of Front neck, PU and k 12 (14, 16, 18, 20, 22) sts on BO edge at center Front, evenly PU and k 22 sts on right side of Front neck, PU and k 22 (24, 26, 28, 30, 32) sts along BO edge at center Back – 78 (82, 86, 90, 94, 98) sts. K 1 row, p 1 row. With WS facing, BO sts purlwise. Join left shoulder seam and side of neck edging. Armhole edging: With RS facing and C (or color of choice), beg at underarm edge, evenly PU and k 72 (78, 84, 90, 96, 102) sts along armhole edge. K 1 row, p 1 row. With WS facing, BO sts purlwise. Sew side seams. Weave in all ends.
